As a resident in San Francisco, he took off several years to perform Standup Comedy professionally. Few people knew of his Medical Background and he drew a following, was soon booked regularly at local clubs, placed high in several comedy competitions, and placed 1st in 2 Competitions among a field of full-time comedians. Word leaked out that he was also a Physician and he began to get press coverage in the local and national Media, including World News Tonight with Peter Jennings.
Peter Jennings said , "In the latter part of the Century, Sir William Olser was one of the very first to recognize the importance of the bedside manner, including the healing power of humor. I suspect he would approve of Dr. Stu Silverstein."
Requests to give humorous presentations at Medical Society Meetings and Conferences across the country came in, and he has been giving his Humor in Medicine??? You Must be Joking ! presentation across the country for over 9 years. In San Francisco, Stu has shared the stage with several well known Comedians and writers, including Dave Feldman ( Staff Writer for Dennis Miller), the late Pat Paulsen, and even Robin Williams at the famed Holy City Zoo. He is currently working with fellow Physician/Comedian Neil Shulman, MD who was the author of the book Doc Hollywood, upon which the Warner Brothers Feature Film of the same name was based. A year after incorporating the techniques outlined in this book to pass the boards, Stu gave a 2 hour lecture for the Board Review Course given by the Osler Institute. He was consistently ranked among the top 5 lecturers by attendees.
Stu is also the co-author of What About Me? Growing Up with a Disabled Sibling.
